Michelle Lima and A.J. Castro Scholarships To Be Awarded In April

Women studying full-time at the college level in the field of Communications or Journalism are eligible to apply for one of four scholarships to be awarded in April.

Two Michelle Lima Professional Journalist Scholarships for $1000 per year in academic years 2000 through 2004 will be awarded. The Southwestern Bell Foundation established this scholarship fund in former KSAT-12 Weekend News and weekday reporter Michelle Lima's name following her death in 1999.

Scholarship candidates must be female, a citizen of the U.S. , a resident of Bexar County, have graduated from any high school in San Antonio or the surrounding region or have a G.E.D., and must be currently enrolled, full-time, at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in Texas working toward a degree in Journalism or Communications.

The San Antonio Chapter of Women established the Ajay Castro Scholarship for Re-entering Women in Communications in honor of local leading communicator, Audreyjane "Ajay" Castro. Successful applicants may earn scholarship ranging from $500 to $1,000. The number of scholarships varies each year.

Scholarship candidates must be a female undergraduate student accepted at or enrolled in a Bexar County university, college, or community college, be accepted at or enrolled in a college, community college or university after a minimum three-lapse from graduating high school or leaving the academic world, be a graduate or G.E.D.-certified, and must be planning a career in a communication-related field.

Applications are available from Denise Barkis Richter at Palo Alto College. She can be reached by phone at (210) 921-5442. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 20, 200. Finalists will be interviewed in early April by an Association of Women in Communications panel. Winners will be notified in late April and asked to accept the scholarship award at the annual Women In Communications Headliner/Proliner Awards Ceremony in May.

Plans Underway for Annual Proliner/Headliner Award Event

Thanks to the efforts of AWC member Susan Phillips, plans are well underway for the 20th Annual Headliner/Proliner Awards to be held May 11th at the Annual Awards Ceremony Banquet at the San Antonio Airport Hilton. Membership is seeking nominations for both Headliner and Proliner award categories.

Entry forms for the event are available by calling the AWC hot line at 231-5799. Entries for Proliner Awards must be received by Tuesday, February 29 and Headliner Awards by March 9th. This call for entries includes two separate categories for outstanding achievers. Headliner Awards honor a few outstanding community leaders in the fields of professional achievement, volunteer service, and public endeavor. Proliner competition is open to all communications professions, both men and women, in Central and South Texas. Entries must represent activities and/or projects implemented, produced, or completed between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 1999. Entries will be judged by another AWC professional chapter.

Award categories include audio-visual production; print, photography design, public relations, advertising/ marketing/television/positive portrayal of women, internet/world wide web; writing for newspaper; magazines, and newsletters, and miscellaneous category for other creative endeavors.

Entry fees are $30 for the first entry and $20 for each additional entry for members and $40 for first entry and $30 for each additional entry for nonmembers.

The annual event is not only an opportunity to possibly be recognized for your outstanding contributions from the past year, but it is also a wonderful event to network with others communications professionals and their peers and to see some of the award-winning work being done here in San Antonio.
